Ragdolls would have to be the most amazing cat ever. Born completely white, they do not develop any of their colour for at least two days, and their pattern for a further two weeks. The Ragdoll will then develop into a seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red (flame) or cream and with a variety of patterns within each colour (depending on the bloodlines). What other breed has such a variety.

But the most magnificent aspect of the Ragdoll is their temperament. Specifically bred for their placid, loving and devoted nature, the Ragdoll is ideal for any animal lover, who might even like a dog except for the barking, jumping, licking and the need for grooming and washing. Ragdolls are low maintenance, with all the advantages of a dog and cat.

A true friend to any animal, the Ragdoll will get along with ‘’anyone’ including other cats, dogs, even rabbits and guinea pigs. They are not independent like other breeds of cats, but keen to have their human around or another animal nearby to keep them company. They are extremely tolerant with kittens, puppies and children.

Because the Ragdoll is so devoted, you will often turn around and find your loyal friend beside you, just wanting your company, and maybe a free pat or cuddle. For this reason the Ragdoll is ideal for any household, from young families, to the elderly; even singles, male or female.

The one thing Ragdoll owners should be very careful about is leaving them outside. Because they are so trusting, the Ragdoll will often go off with any stranger for that free cuddle, or even worse, just sit there if another dog comes around. Believing the dog (or feral cat) just wants to play, your Ragdoll will not defend itself or run away.

Ragdolls love to be spoilt and enjoy being inside. Easy to train, you will rarely, if ever, have problems once your Ragdoll is trained, especially in using the kitty litter and scratchy pole. You can even train them to go for a walk on a collar/harness and lead, but this does require patience and time. They are always keen to please you.

Although Ragdolls do not require much grooming, they enjoy the attention of a weekly brushing and a good diet. This will ensure they maintain their fluffy and healthy appearance. They only shed in Spring and will require a little more grooming during this time. A Ragdoll's coat, is medium to long hair, but does not mat or knot. They enjoy grooming themselves and therefore, you rarely, if ever, need to bath them, but they certainly enjoy the pampering.

History
The Ragdoll breed originated in America by Ann Baker in the 1960’s, who believed the temperament and traits in her Persian, Josephine, and her off spring, were worth preserving. Along with the large males (sires) specifically chosen for their similar friendly and relaxed traits, the Ragdoll was slowly developed over many generations.

A unique breed which can grow as large as 10kg (normally 4 – 7kg) the Ragdoll is true to its name and colour, and has been kept pure since the 60’s. For this reason it is extremely important other, but similar breeds, are not introduced into the Ragdoll bloodlines.

Not only do they have distinct colours, markings and patterns, the Ragdoll also has unique stunning blue eyes. The bluer the eyes, the better the breeding and bloodlines.

There are many theories about the origin of the Ragdoll and many sites you can get more information from. It is true to say however, Ann Baker is responsible for the origin and did an incredible job with Josephine (her Persian/Angora like female) together with Blackie (completely black Burmese like male) and Daddy Warbucks (a mitted seal point male).

The hard work and vision of Ann Baker definitely paid off. It cannot be disputed, that there are many cat lovers and Ragdoll owners around the world, who would not have the experience or enjoyment of Ragdolls if it were not for Anne Baker.
